Growing Artichokes

If you’ve been reading Donny’s Backyard Chronicles and you’ve been wondering to yourself “What’s Howard’s role in all of this?” then here you go. If you haven’t been wondering, then I guess you can skip this one. As soon as we decided to start growing vegetables, I knew that I wanted to try to grow artichokes. Brooklyn may not be the ideal climate to grow them, but I had to give it a try. I started them indoors, and yes, that’s a takeout container, from a Thai restaurant. The really long ones that have fallen over have been growing for a couple of weeks, but the other sprouts just started a couple of days ago. There’s even one you can’t see that’s sprouting out of the bottom of one of the starter soil pucks. I only get sun in my apartment for about an hour a day, so I’m surprised at how well these have been going so far. I’ll let you know how it goes.
