Market Watch: Pink Banana Squash

These monstrous squashes are priced at a reasonable $1/pound — reasonable, that is, until you realize that the banana squash grows to at least 10 pounds. Internet research tells me that this is an heirloom variety first introduced to the United States (possibly from South America) in the 1800s. You can prepare it the same way you would any other winter squash, and it apparently has a creamy texture and a sweet flavor. I wouldn’t know; these were far too large for me to carry home.
