Celebrating Summer With La Newyorkina & Lonestar Taco

Last night I had the good fortune (and also I bought a ticket) to attend a pop-up fundraising dinner for our friends at La Newyorkina and Lonestar Taco, who are both trying to find a permanent space. It was an evening of fantastic food and great company. The dinner, which Lonestar chef Wayne Surber told us he wanted to “play around” with, was entitled “Celebrate Summer” and featured a bounty of fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients. Among the highlights: lime chia agua fresca, heirloom gazpacho, and the “tres leches” dessert (desserts were by La Newyorkina’s Fany Gerson). “Dirt Candy: A Cookbook” Reviewed

Although I’ve only eaten at Dirt Candy twice, I feel a real affection for the restaurant. I fell in love with their stone ground grits on my first visit, and I have kept up with all of the doings related to the restaurant. After we wrote about the restaurant in 2009 we got an email from Chef/Owner Amanda Cohen, and we wrote back and forth a few times. All these years later I got an email from Cohen asking if I wanted an advance copy of their new cookbook, due out this week from Clarkson Potter. I knew the cookbook was coming, and I knew that it was in graphic novel form with art by Ryan Dunlavey (illustrator of The Comic Book History of Comics and others), and of course I gratefully accepted my free advance copy.

Market Watch: Windsor Terrace Sunday Edition

Ever since I moved to Brooklyn, the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket has been my go-to Farmer’s Market. A Greenmarket recently opened in Windsor Terrace, at a location a mere two minute walk from my apartment. Since I wasn’t able to go to the Grand Army Plaza market yesterday, I thought I’d check out the new one. The Windsor Terrace market is not as big as the Grand Army Plaza one, but there was a lot of great produce to be seen. Fresh eucalyptus, heirloom tomatoes, and these wonderfully ripe blackberries. My work schedule will be changing soon, so it looks like the Windsor Terrace market may become my new weekly stop; it isn’t open year-round, but it is open through mid-November.

Is 160 Havemeyer St in south Williamsburg the foodiest address? There’s already Nha Toi, a Vietnamese joint serving not-so-traditional food like a fried duck egg banh mi. I still haven’t been but from what James Boo said, I should’ve gone asap 2 years ago.

So why do I think 160 Havemeywer is the foodiest address? Well both newly opened Lake Trout and Blue Collar Good Job also have the same address.

Grilling on Fire Island

Reader, you are looking at the best meal I’ve eaten all year. I’ve said before that the company you keep while eating makes a big difference, and the atmosphere does as well. A few weekends ago my friends Jeff & Eva invited me out to join them at their summer rental on Fire Island. I had never been there before, and was not prepared for how quiet, isolated, and relaxing the day was. I had picked up some eggplant and some summer squash from the farmer’s market on the way out there, and we grilled them up with some olive oil and sea salt for lunch.

The Best Way To Cook Mushrooms

A lot of people tell me that they don’t like mushrooms, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they just haven’t had them cooked properly. Its true, sometimes mushrooms can turn out slimy (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing), but cooking them so that they are deliciously crunchy and chewy is actually really easy. All it takes is some patience. I picked up some beautiful mushrooms while in Brighton Beach the other day, and I’ll show you just how easy it is.

Probably one of the best thing about going from a food truck to a brick and mortar is the ability to expand the menu. There is just so many things you can do on a truck but with an actual shop, you have room to experiment and the resources to create more stuff.

So when Kim Ima, owner of The Treats Truck, opened her own shop in Carroll Gardens (The Treats Truck Stop), she was able to expand her menu to include savory stuff.

On the list of savory items were mac n’cheese, salads, sandwiches, grilled cheeses and BLTs. When I went for lunch, I was torn between getting the chicken salad sandwich or mac n’cheese. Then I saw the BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado) and of course the combo of bacon and avocado in a sandwich was the an obvious choice for me. And all sandwiches came with a side of salad, fruit or………..KIMCHI! Yes I got kimchi with my sandwich. Oh and for $1 I added an egg so I guess it was a BLTAE?!

The sandwich was delicious….crispy strips of bacon and creamy avocado. Hm…. As for the kimchi, at first I thought it was store bought because it tasted..well like store bought (in a good way) but Kim said she made it at the shop. Wow! Housemade kimchi! I told her she should jar it and sell it.
