Market Watch: The Hurricane Freak-Out Edition

The Windsor Terrace Greenmarket was more crowded than usual this morning. I assume it’s due to te impending arrival of Hurricane/Tropical Storm/Frankenstorm Sandy; people are stocking up on everything, including fresh vegetables. Hey, whatever gets more business to the Farmer’s Market is a good thing, I’d say. I decided to feature these Brussels sprouts on the stalk, because most people don’t realize that this is how they grow. There’s not really any difference in the flavor or anything, but when you’re buying fresh veggies you’re looking for something that has been touched as little as possible. That means carrots with the tops still attached; peas still in the pod; Brussels sprouts still on the stalk. Plus they look very dramatic.

Autumn At The New Amsterdam Market

The New Amsterdam Market, down by the South Street Seaport, is happening almost every Sunday on until the end of December. This is a great time of year to visit, and enjoy the fall weather and the view of the bridges. You may remember our friends at Lonestar Taco (see here); well they have a booth at the market, making tacos fresh to order. I got one of their Green Market tacos, in this case filled with butternut squash and cauliflower with a sweet and spicy sauce.

Village Voice Brooklyn Pour

Village Voice Brooklyn Pour

We all know Village Voice throws some great events (Choice Eats, Choice Streets), so I was pretty excited to attend my first Village Voice Brooklyn Pour. Held at One Hanson (the bank tower where Brooklyn Flea happens during the winter time), every nook and crack of the place were filled with breweries and beers. Breweries like Sixpoint, Brooklyn Brewery, Asahi Beer, Sly Fox Beer and many I haven’t heard of like…. Harlem Brewing Company and Innis & Gunn.

Check out some photos from that day and a list of beers I love to try again….

No Name Bar Now Serving Thai Food

No Name Bar, Thai food

Last time I went to No Name Bar in Greenpoint for dinner, I was still enjoying the chili sesame noodles made by Lindsay Salminen. Though just a short two months later I found out she was no longer there and that the kitchen in the downstairs area is now serving Thai food. Obviously I was sad about this. Where am I suppose to have my chili sesame noodles now?

I wasn’t planning on checking out the new Thai spot till later but out of town friends wanted something light after a week of “too much meat” and so I suggested we try it out.
