It’s Vendy Awards 2013! Once again, we showed our support and appreciation to the hard working street food vendors by over stuffing ourselves. This year the Vendy Awards took place at Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. It may had been one of the coolest and weirdest place I’ve been to for an event. Though compare to Governors Island, Industry City had more space and didn’t require taking the ferry across (I walked home afterwards, so close!).

So it seems the Red Hook vendors are on a roll. For the 3rd year in a row, the top prize went to a Red Hook vendor. The El Olomega (@elolomega), one of the more popular Red Hook trucks, won the judges over with their delicious pupusas. Hm…..pupusas.

Luke’s Lobster took People’s Choice, Nuchas took Rookie of the Year, Home by the Range took the Tide award for Most Messy Yet Tasty plus the award for Best Jersey vendor, Best of Market Vendor went to Khao Man Gai NY and Best Dessert went to Itizy Ice Cream.

LA Eats: The Food Porn Edition


I just came back from a 2 week time off in LA and it was FREAKING wonderful. Though it wasn’t all play. The first week I spent it with these guys (yes I was doing work) and the second week was a total tv on the couch time.

Besides eating burgers from In-N-Out and mom’s cooking, most of the meals I had were from places I have never been before. Luckily everything I ate during my 2 weeks in LA was mighty delicious.

FiDi Food Cart Tour With Turnstile Tours

Tomorrow is the 8th annual Vendy Awards (3rd year at Governors Island). The Vendy Awards may just be one of my favorite events to attend. I missed out last year but I’m pretty damn excited for this year since many of my favorite trucks/vendors are nominated for an award this year (Uncle Gussy’s, Torta Neza, The Cinnamon Snail, Piaztlan Authentic Mexican Food, Melt Bakery).

Another person that I know is a big fan/supporter of street food is my friend, Brian Hoffman aka Eat This NY. He’s such a big supporter of street food, he even gives food cart tours in the Financial District and Midtown (along with his fellow tour guides from Turnstile Tours). I thought it would be the best time to take one of their tours before the Vendy Awards. I have heard many good things and Blondie from Blondie and Brownie went on his tour last Wednesday and had a blast.

Last time I was home in LA, I found JJ Noodle House and named it my favorite noodle shop. So obviously when I visited LA again, I had to make a trip back to JJ Noodle House. Though this time instead of getting one of their amazing delicious noodle soup, I decided to try something else. I got the spicy pork over rice with veggies and one egg. To be honest, I was a little disappointed by the amount of pork I got. And it wasn’t so much spicy pork over rice but more pork with some spicy sauce spooned over the rice. But besides those few things, this dish was quite delicious, especially the few bites that had the egg, pork and rice in them. Yum

Philly Pinoy Is A Cure For The Homesick

You probably think Red Hook, Brooklyn would be the last place to find Filipino food. But if you know the story behind Philly Pinoy (used to be the “Bait Shop” with a tiki bar looking exterior) then you know it’s exactly where it should be. Catered to the large number of Filipino cruise ship workers that come in with the Queen Mary 2 and Caribbean Princess, Philly Pinoy is just mere blocks away for the homesick workers to get some home cooked meals. Last time without knowing how Benjamin David, owner of Philly Pinoy, runs his shop, I went looking for lunch and failed to get any food.

This time armed with my new found knowledge and the handy Brooklyn cruise terminal schedule, I didn’t fail.

Ever since I moved to NYC, I have been searching for some good hainan chicken rice. It’s a very simple dish to make but somehow I rather go to a restaurant for it.

My search so far hasn’t yield any good results. All of the hainan chicken rice I have tried in Chinatown, portion wise, small and the chicken were mostly bones. What I’m looking for is this! A big plate of delicious rice topped with boneless dark meat and served with a tasty spicy sauce. In LA a lot of Thai restaurants will serve this dish but not in NYC. I have only found chicken rice in Malaysian restaurants. The only good thing about the dish in NYC is that they’re cheap, like $4 cheap.

The latest place I found to have hainan chicken rice is at Skyway Malaysian on Allen St. I randomly found a take-out menu in my drawer as I was cleaning my room. When I saw that they have the chicken dish I went for lunch the next day.

When I placed my order, instead of asking me dark or white meat, the waitress asked bones or boneless. Interesting. I told her boneless will be great. While waiting for my dish I was watching Barefoot Contessa on their rather loud flatscreen tv. Moments later my dish arrived and I was sad to see that it was just like the other hainan chicken rice dish I had in NYC. Also there were bones in the chicken. The pieces of chicken were smooth and was delicious when dipped into the hot sauce and soy sauce. The rice tasted a little weird and nothing like the rice I had from other places. A little disappointed and was still hungry afterwards. I MIGHT go back just because I saw a deep fried hainan chicken rice on the menu.
