Ever since the weather got cooler and it wasn’t INSANE to turn on the oven, I’ve been roasting a lot of stuff. I mostly roast big chunks of meat but lately I have found much join in roasting veggies. In the past, whenever I roast veggies it’s usually carrots or potatoes, as a side dish. But ever since I had a pasta dish at Allswell that had roasted red cabbage, I was hooked.
So now, every Sunday I would walk down to the Park Slope Farmers Market, pick up some veggies and roast them. It’s quick (well 30mins or so), easy and mighty delicious. I have put together a small list of veggies everyone should try roasting.

Probably one of the best thing about going from a food truck to a brick and mortar is the ability to expand the menu. There is just so many things you can do on a truck but with an actual shop, you have room to experiment and the resources to create more stuff.
So when Kim Ima, owner of The Treats Truck, opened her own shop in Carroll Gardens (The Treats Truck Stop), she was able to expand her menu to include savory stuff.
On the list of savory items were mac n’cheese, salads, sandwiches, grilled cheeses and BLTs. When I went for lunch, I was torn between getting the chicken salad sandwich or mac n’cheese. Then I saw the BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado) and of course the combo of bacon and avocado in a sandwich was the an obvious choice for me. And all sandwiches came with a side of salad, fruit or………..KIMCHI! Yes I got kimchi with my sandwich. Oh and for $1 I added an egg so I guess it was a BLTAE?!
The sandwich was delicious….crispy strips of bacon and creamy avocado. Hm…. As for the kimchi, at first I thought it was store bought because it tasted..well like store bought (in a good way) but Kim said she made it at the shop. Wow! Housemade kimchi! I told her she should jar it and sell it.

Here’s a thing I learned at a Christmas party I went last month…..AVOCADO AND BRUSSELS SPROUTS AND BACON TOGETHER ARE DAMN DELICIOUS! Why why why did it take so long for me to find out?! I vowed to put avocado in everything I eat starting today.
I tried to recreate that same dish but with pork cracklings (cracklings came from this recipe..slow roasted pork shoulder) instead of bacon. I par boiled the sprouts first for few minutes. Then moved them into a bowl, drizzled olive oil and seasoned. Added the pork cracklings and mixed the whole thing together and spread the mixture onto a baking pan. Then I roasted them in the oven at 350degrees until they’re nice and crispy.
I was lazy so I just scooped pieces of avocado into the Brussels sprouts and crackling mixture. I think a squirt of lemon juice might’ve been good.
As I mentioned in my previous post about Old Town Rancho Cucamonga, that it was great that the city had left some parts of the city untouched. Here’s another reason why, The Deli. Situated next to a generic liquor store, it’s quite hard to miss the sandwich shop. With it’s giant window decoration advertising their Weenie Wednesdays, all their hot dogs for $1 on Wednesdays, who wouldn’t notice that?!
On my January LA trip, I tried to go to this place but it was closed. That made me more determined this time to go there. The menu mostly consisted of sandwiches with few burger and hot dog options. This is pretty much an old timey sandwich shop and the only thing that has changed over the years are the prices.
