Howard’s Favorites of 2012

I know it’s been a while since I posted anything; time has been going by way too quickly. The end of the year is suddenly upon us, and that means it’s time for my annual list of favorites. Above you see rice cakes from Mission Chinese, dusted with copious amounts of mouth-numbing Sichuan peppercorn. A great dish, to be sure, but did it make my list of favorites?

Howard’s 2012: A Year of Food in Video

Howard’s Restaurant Meals of 2012 from Eat to Blog on Vimeo.

The other night I got a (drunken) request to do a follow-up to my year-in-review video from last year. I thought that was a great idea, so here’s the video of my 2012 restaurant meals. Above you will see a lot of the food I ate this past year, though certainly not all of it. All restaurants are here in NYC unless otherwise noted. Enjoy!

Win A FREE Copy Of “Yes, Chef” by Marcus Samuelsson

We’ve obtained an advance copy of Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelsson and we want to give it away to YOU!

Marcus Samuelsson, chef at Red Rooster, has had quite a life. Born in Ethiopia, his mother died when he was very young and he was adopted by a couple from Sweden. Growing up in Sweden he had nothing to connect him to his Ethiopian heritage other than food, and he’s carried that connection with him as he’s worked as a chef all over the world. At the tender age fo 24 he became chef at Aquavit, and he became the youngest chef to earn a three-star review in the NY Times. He’s appeared on Top Chef and cooked dinner for the Obamas. His memoir is set to be published on 6/26/2012, but you can get a copy now! Be the envy of your friends!

To win a copy of this book, you must follow us on Twitter and tweet the following message exactly as it appears here:

Four Years and 1000 Posts!

Wow, has it really been four years? Has it really been 1000 posts? It’s been a long, long journey. We’ve eaten a lot of food, and we’ve met a lot of wonderful people. We wanted to say “thank you” to all of our friends and family, who for four years have been putting up with our food obsessions, pulling cameras out during family meals, and insisting on traveling to far away restaurants. And and even bigger “THANK YOU” to all of our readers — we owe everything to you.

For your amusement, please view Howard’s first post and Donny’s first post and see just how far we’ve come.

Thank you again!

Here for your viewing and listening pleasure are many (though certainly not all) of the foods I ate in 2011, both the good and the bad. All restaurants are in NYC unless otherwise noted. Bonus points to anyone who can identify the restaurants whose names I have forgotten. Music = “Prizefighter” by the Eels.

Hidden Gems

So if you’re a regular reader you may have noticed that we haven’t been posting as much lately as we used to. There are a few reasons for that: we lead busy lives, and we’re a bit lazy… but one of the reasons is that we’ve been working on a project for the Wall Street Journal. It’s called “Hidden Gems” and it’s a WSJ custom microsite sponsored by Mastercard. We created some Top 10 lists of NYC food and restaurants in six different categories; the content will be refreshing every two weeks, so bookmark the page and keep checking back! Check it out here!
