Village Voice Choice Eats 2013

This past Tuesday at the 69th Armory, The Village Voice threw its 6th annual Choice Eats festival with over 86 participating New York City restaurants. While we wanted to eat every dish (and sample as many alcoholic beverage), after our seventh or eighth sample we realized that feast feat was, well, impossible. And dangerous. We did manage to hit the munchie double digits (I counted about 18 different restaurants) before we rolled back home. As first timers with zero prep and really no desire to pace ourselves, I think we did a pretty good job.

A few of our favorite choice eats? Salted crack caramel ice cream from Ample Hills Creamery, City Grit (the bite sized pot pie was just adorable), chicken chorizo from Brooklyn Cured, shrimp rolls from Luke’s Lobster, and hands down the Grass Jelly Milk Tea from Nom Wah Tea Parlor. The perfect ratio of tea, milk, ice, and grass jelly that our heads actually figuratively exploded with flavor.

The coolest part of the culinary extravaganza? A portion of the (sold out) ticket sales went to Slow Food NYC.

Now it’s your turn. Did you go? What was your favorite bite?

Mini chicken pot pie from City Grit. They were so cute but that didn’t stop me from munching on them. Super buttery crust!

Scott Bridi of Brooklyn Cured is truly a sausage master. The chicken chorizo was mighty good with just the right hint of heat.

Thirty Acres is from New Jersey and they definitely won the “WOW” award. Slow poached egg in red wine topped with roe and mustard.

Choice Eats veteran Luke’s Lobster served up some great shrimp rolls.

Bobwhite Lunch and Supper Counter did their popular fried chicken but served cold! Topped with a mustardy sauce, it tasted pretty awesome even if it was served cold.

On a lighter note, the fluke ceviche from Juliette was just perfect and obviously you got to wash all those delicious bites with some sort of drink. Our go to drink that night was the Honey Old Fashion.

Until next year!
