L.A. Eats – The Gastrobus Farmer’s Market Edition Two

Besides the Buttermilk Truck, another truck I just had to go was the Gastrobus. Yes I have been to the Gastrobus twice (here and here) but well Antonio and Lana are just such great people. I just had to give them a visit and so should everyone! I wanted my whole family to try so I brought them along. Which also mean I would be able to try a lot of the dishes that day heehee.

It was their organic Sunday menu so they were parked at the Los Feliz farmers market at the post office parking lot. Last time I saw Antonio and Lana it was in September so I was glad that they still remembered me when I arrived at the truck. Lana and I chatted a bit before I placed my order. Well I pretty much ordered everything off the menu, like I said I wanted to try them all!

GustOrganics

Forget the too-cute name (Gusto, GustOrganics, or Gusto Organics depending on where you look), and the all-over-the-map menu, and think about the ideas behind GustOrganics. According to their website they are “the first and only certified organic restaurant in New York.” They also claim that they are “one of the greenest restaurants in the world.” Now take a look at the grilled vegetable pizza above and ask yourself a question: Why would a restaurant that obviously prides itself on using such fresh and natural ingredients be serving fresh tomatoes in mid January?

Blue Marble Ice Cream

Blue Marble
Last year while I was still living in the area, my friend and I walked by Blue Marble when it was still “Coming Soon”. Then after that I didn’t hear much about it besides my occasional questioning to my friend since she lives across the street from it. In late September of 2007 there was the Atlantic Antic, an annual street fair on Atlantic Ave from 4th Ave to Hicks St in Brooklyn. I think it’s one of the best street fairs because it has vendors from Brooklyn, mostly the ones that are already on Atlantic Ave. Anyways, so last year as my friends and I were walking down Atlantic Ave. enjoying the street fair, we noticed a tiny Blue Marble tent. I can’t remember if they were serving ice cream at the tent since they do serve baked goods at the shop.

Green tea ice cream on sugar coneSo fast forward to last weekend when it was hot, humid, and about to rain. We just stepped out of the theater after watching Wall-e (cute movie!!) and like magic we both wanted ice cream from Blue Marble. Just as my friend parked her bike it started to rain so we went inside to a lovely space that was very, erm, very…..barn like? The floors and furniture were made out of wood then painted white, near the entrance there was a picture of a painted cow. My goal that day was to get a scoop of their coffee ice cream BUT when I saw their green tea I asked for a sample. After trying just that little bit I decided to get a scoop on a sugar cone. There used to be a brand of ice cream that made REALLY good green tea ice cream but for some reason I couldn’t find them anymore. Ever since I’ve been searching for that good green tea ice cream besides going to a Japanese restaurant. The green tea at Blue Marble was creamy, rich and just the right amount of green tea flavors. I have had so many green tea ice cream that felt more like a sorbet than a rich creamy ice cream. Just for a moment I had forgotten the yucky weather outside, thanks Blue Marble!!
