“Dirt Candy: A Cookbook” Reviewed

All art by Ryan Dunlavey

Although I’ve only eaten at Dirt Candy twice, I feel a real affection for the restaurant. I fell in love with their stone ground grits on my first visit, and I have kept up with all of the doings related to the restaurant. After we wrote about the restaurant in 2009 we got an email from Chef/Owner Amanda Cohen, and we wrote back and forth a few times. All these years later I got an email from Cohen asking if I wanted an advance copy of their new cookbook, due out this week from Clarkson Potter. I knew the cookbook was coming, and I knew that it was in graphic novel form with art by Ryan Dunlavey (illustrator of The Comic Book History of Comics and others), and of course I gratefully accepted my free advance copy.

Win A FREE Copy Of “Yes, Chef” by Marcus Samuelsson

We’ve obtained an advance copy of Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelsson and we want to give it away to YOU!

Marcus Samuelsson, chef at Red Rooster, has had quite a life. Born in Ethiopia, his mother died when he was very young and he was adopted by a couple from Sweden. Growing up in Sweden he had nothing to connect him to his Ethiopian heritage other than food, and he’s carried that connection with him as he’s worked as a chef all over the world. At the tender age fo 24 he became chef at Aquavit, and he became the youngest chef to earn a three-star review in the NY Times. He’s appeared on Top Chef and cooked dinner for the Obamas. His memoir is set to be published on 6/26/2012, but you can get a copy now! Be the envy of your friends!

Win a FREE Copy of “Blood, Bones, & Butter” by Gabrielle Hamilton

We’ve obtained an advance copy of Blood, Bones, & Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton and we want to give it away to YOU!

Gabrielle Hamilton is the chef at Prune, a favorite of New York’s top chefs. Blood, Bones, & Butter is described by Anthony Bourdain as “the best memoir by a chef ever. EVER. Gabrielle Hamilton packs more heart, soul, and pure power into one beautifull crafted page than I’ve accomplished in my entire writing career.” Mario Batali says “I will read this book to my children and then burn all the books I have written for pretending to be anything even close to this.” I think you get the point. The book is not due to be released until March of 2011, but you can read it now!

The New Brooklyn Cookbook

The New Brooklyn Cookbook
I think if you’re read this blog or seen my photo blog http://ultrateg.com, you’ll know how much I love Brooklyn. So when I found out there was going to be a Brooklyn cookbook I was like hellz yeah then I found out that Michael Harlan Turkell shot all of the photos I was like double hellz yeah! If you don’t know who Michael Harlan Turkell is, he’s the photo editor and photographer for Edible Manhattan and Edible Brooklyn.

This past Saturday I attended the New Brooklyn Cookbook event over at The Brooklyn Kitchen. The cookbook was put together by Brendan and Melissa Vaughan. At the event they lead a panel of chefs from some of the restaurants that were featured in the cookbook. Chef Tom Kearney of The Farm on Adderley, Chef Sean Rembold of Marlow & Sons, Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli of Frankies Spuntino and Prime Meats and Kheedim Oh of Mama’s O Kimchee were all there.
